14th January Hugh Lofting (1886 - 1947)

Hugh Lofting was the British author responsible for the Dr Dolittle stories. The character, Dr Dolittle was a medical doctor in a town called Puddleby and he could talk to animals. Hugh Lofting created this character for letters he sent home to his children from the front during World War I. His family enjoyed them so much that they encouraged him to publish them. Today, most children are introduced to Dr Dolittle through film. His stories have been made into more than one movie. And if they read about him it is likely to be in a reader that has abridged and/or modernised the stories. Nevertheless, it is good to remember where the original idea came from.
