This day celebrates those mythical creatures that have captured our imagination for centuries. The earliest stories of mermaids can be traced back to ancient Assyria and Greece, and they have appeared in various forms throughout history – from folklore to literature to pop culture. My young students, especially the girls are certainly enamoured with mermaids so celebrating Mermaid day for them would be easy. Make everything mauve or aquamarine, provide mermaid tails and mermaid tales!
The mermaid tales that are popular with my under eights are:
• Mermaid Day by Diana Murray
• All About Mermaids by Izzy Quinn
• Mermaid's Tail by Beatrice Blue
• Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet by Jane O'Connor
• The Mermaid Moon by Briony May Smith
• The Little Mermaid by Sarah Gibb
• Lily the Pond Mermaid by Lucy Fleming
• The Singing Mermaid by Julia Donaldson
• Mermaid Dreams by Kate Pugsley
• How to Catch a Mermaid by Adam Wallace
• Oona the Brave Mermaid by Kelly DiPucchio
• Mermaid School by Joanne Stewart Wetzel
• Mermaid and Me by Soosh
• Harmony and Echo by Brigette Barrager
• Part-time Mermaid by Deborah Underwood
• Can You Catch a Mermaid? by Jane Ray
Do you have these? They will offer a different perspective on mermaids.
• Nen and the Lonely Fisherman by Ian Eagleton
• Mariana and the Merchild: A Folk Tale from Chile by Caroline Pitcher
And look out for these new ones that are coming
• The Girl and the Mermaid by Hollie Hughes
