2nd June Doughnut Day

June 2 is World Doughnut Day, not only Fish and Chip Day, two favourite foods of many. Doughnut Day has been celebrated since 1938, starting off as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army in Chicago during the Great Depression. Even now many doughnut drives raise money for charities, so you can eat all you like for a good cause.

During World War I a group of Salvation Army volunteers was dispatched to the frontlines with the mission of providing comforting meals for the troops. They soon found out that donuts were an effective way to provide food while navigating the difficulties of cooking in very dire circumstances. These brave volunteers would later be known as “donut lassies”. They would even use war helmets as a utensil to fry up seven donuts at a time.

Doughnuts or the shorter form donuts have become a very popular feature of children's books, probably because this sugary snack tastes wonderful. The Mr Panda books by Steve Antony are always on loan especially with the preschoolers and the doughnuts in these books certainly look appealing. They even feature on clothing.

If you would like to read about the history of the donut try these books:

Doughnuts: The Hole Story by Julie Knutson

28th October Last Friday in October World Lemur Day

What animal loves to bask in the sun, has sweat glands in their wrists, and is found only in Madagascar? The lemur. It is a small primate. They resemble a monkey, with a long tail and thick fur. They always live in trees and are very active mostly at night. There are several types of lemurs and day by day lemur species are moving towards extinction. However, a series of restoration processes has also been taken to protect the types of lemurs from the dangers that they face.

Lemurs are another animal that the children in Australia will not see unless they are on holiday overseas or at a zoo, but like raccoons, meerkats and sloths they fascinate them. They are quite popular as characters in picture books.

The objective of this day is to raise awareness about the need to preserve this endangered species, and to celebrate its unique attributes. The holiday was first observed in 2014, when it was founded by Jonah Ratsimmbazafy in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Lemurs are often the sidekick to the main character and do not have the starring role. This is the case in Steve Antony's popular Mr Panda series where the lemur is in every book and the students comment on him, but he is there among a host of other black and white animals. Here are some lemur books where the lemur is the focus to help you celebrate:

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch in British history and 2022 marks her Platinum Jubilee, celebrating 70 years of service as Queen, and while I think Australia should  cease to be part of the Commonwealth and govern without a Governor General appointed by the Queen, I do think that Queen Elizabeth has proved herself to be an amazing individual and someone to be revered. My daughter lives and works in London and this weekend coming there is a four day weekend there (Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June) to celebrate the culmination of the Queen's Jubilee which I am sure she will appreciate.

What will I be doing to celebrate? Well we could have a display in the library of the few books we do have that feature the Queen in some capacity, but given that this week is also National Reconciliation Week which I think is very important for Australia, it would probably not be timely or diplomatic to celebrate the Queen and Australia's links to British history. Perhaps after Reconciliation Week we could have a very low key display.

What books? We have these:

• Steve Antony's series

• Nicholas Allan's The Queen's Knickers

• Peppa Visits the Queen

Little Elizabeth by Valerie Wilding and Pauline Gregory

Queen Elizabeth II by Susannah Davidson

Tea With the the Queen by Pip Jones and Ella Okstrad

Shhh! Don't Wake the Royal Baby by Martha Mumford and Ada Grey

• And one to buy, the latest in Little People Big Dreams  series

16th March Panda Day

On March 16, conservationists and animal lovers alike spread the word about one of the world’s most endangered and adored animals. Panda Day brings together the efforts of an international community dedicated to protecting and restoring habitat for pandas. Pandas are very sensitive creatures and disruptions in their environment lead to issues with them reproducing. They do not reproduce readily in captivity so this makes ensuring their natural habitat remains even more pertinent.

Fortunately, children are besotted with pandas so any display of books we do in the library which features them, is very quickly depleted, even more so than polar bears. It is good that these two 'bear' days are so close together as it means we can quickly replace one display with the other. Our library has ample books to do this. See pandas here and polar bears here.

Mr Panda books are such a favourite with the preschoolers and Kindergarten students so these five books are never in the library. Once they have gone though, there is still plenty of fiction to go round. For the same age group there is Neil Gaiman's Chu and Sophy Henn's Pom Pom.

For older students who also like a series of picture books about the same character there is Jon J. Muth's series about Stillwater. These require a more sophisticated level of  reading and beg discussion so they are good to read with an adult.

If you then read through the large number of other narrative and expository texts, there's still some beginning chapter books to explore!

Every March 16th
