Science Week 2026

The school theme for National Science Week in 2026 is Seeds of Science: nurturing science for all.

This theme invites students across Australia to explore the power of curiosity, inquiry and shared learning in growing scientific understanding. Just as seeds need the right conditions to grow, knowledge flourishes when it is nurtured, shared and applied to real-world and authentic challenges across all the scientific disciplines.

The theme encourages schools to explore how ideas take root, develop and spread – from the first spark of a question to the sharing of discoveries that benefit the wider community. It’s a celebration of how knowledge grows when tended with care, creativity and collaboration.

The Teacher's Resource Book has lots of wonderful ideas for areas to explore.

The school library has all of these books about seeds to get you started:

11th of April to the 22nd of April is Nature Play Week

From the 11th of April to the 22nd of April is Nature Play Week. Nature Play Week is an annual event that celebrates the importance of outdoor play and connecting children with nature. The following provides activity ideas that will help you celebrate Nature Play Week and can be implemented into the curriculum for children. If the preschool teachers came to me with this list of suggested activities I would find it very easy to provide picture books to use as provocations.

Mud Kitchen Play: Set up a mud kitchen where children can mix, pour, and create with natural materials.

  Leaf Art: Use leaves to create prints, collages, or even crowns.

  Bug Observation: Provide magnifying glasses for children to observe insects and learn about their habitats.

5th April Dandelion Day

Did you know that dandelions are the only plant found on every continent in the world?

This blog entry has disappeared into the ether and I haven't got time at the moment to redo it.

Most of the books I talked about, however are on my Pinterest page.

5th August Sunflower Day

Sunflowers are said to be a symbol of adoration, loyalty, and longevity. Their bright yellow colour is a sign of happiness, friendship, and intelligence. Much like the sun, sunflowers mirror vibrancy and give off the energy of life. Some websites say it is National Sunflower Day in the USA on the first Saturday in August. Others say it is the 21st August. Here in Australia it is  Sunflower Day on the 28th September. Whenever it is celebrated this day reminds us to show our inner sunshine, while taking the opportunity to share one of the earth’s most beautiful flowers.

It is fitting to celebrate Sunflower Day in our library now as the library is decorated for Book Week where the theme is Read Grow Inspire. Sunflowers are so easy to grow and so inspiring because of their size, the way they turn their heads to the sun, and their cheery disposition. So let's read about them. There are so many picture books about growing them.

So opens this beautifully lyrical book which follows a young girl over the course of a growing season as she plants, tends, enjoys and then warmly remembers the sunflower she grows in her garden. It is my pick! Then any of these stories:
