22nd April International Mother Earth Day

International Mother Earth Day is observed every year on April 22nd. This date was chosen to coincide with Earth Day, which has been celebrated since 1970. This day is an acknowledgement that the Earth and its ecosystems provide its inhabitants with life and sustenance. It also recognises a collective responsibility, as called for in the 1992 Rio Declaration, to promote harmony with nature and the Earth to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations of humanity.

Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Nature is suffering. Oceans filling with plastic and turning more acidic. Extreme heat, wildfires and floods, have affected millions of people. The children I teach know all this and worry about it. There are so many picture books that highlight this that it is hard for them not to know.

Let's start with a book that shows Mother Earth as a 'character' in the story.

Then another where Earth is personified.

Before reading for examples that show what we have done

and reading about what we can do!
