5th August
Tomorrow is Hiroshima Day, held on the 6th August, to commemorate the date in 1945 when the first atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Special vigils and peace marches are held to remind people of the dangers of nuclear warfare, but in the classroom this day can be marked by revisiting Eleanor Coerr's story of Sadako and the thousand paper cranes that she folded in the hope that she would live or reading picture books such as Peace Crane by Sheila Hamanaka or My Hiroshima by holocaust survivor Junko Morimoto.
